So join La Trobe for winter comp at Fawkner Park to get your weekly Touch Footy fix. We’re entering womens, mens and mixed teams on Wednesday (and possibly Thursday) nights. If you’ve got any questions don’t hesitate to contact the club, otherwise fill out your expression of interest now!
Over the weekend of April 9th and 10th La Trobe University Touch Club sent 47 participants down to Sale, in Gippsland, to the annual Sale Knockout Touch Football Tournament.
The squad was comprised of alumni, known as The Balding Eagles, and current University students, all with different skill levels. Men’s and women’s games were played on Saturday, where we have two teams competing in each of the men’s and women’s divisions.
The mixed division was played on Sunday where we had 5 teams competing across the B-grade mixed and social mixed divisions. The Harpy Eagles came second in the mixed social division after going down in a drop-off in a hard fought grand final against Monash University. They still won some prize money for the club though!
The weekend however was not just about playing touch. The Sale Touch Knockout had 59 teams from Victoria and NSW compete and is a highlight for all teams and paticularly LTUTC, with club members flying in from interstate to come away with the club.
The tournament acts as a great weekend to catchup with friends, play solid games of touch football against quality competition, participate in some great team bonding games and of course, have a boogie on the Kazbah dance floor. I’m sure everyone who went is looking forward to the next touch trip away!
La Trobe University Touch Club is proud to be invited to run in the Wings for Life World Run 2016.
Occurring on May 8th, touchies will take off running in the night until the moving finish line aka the catcher car catches up to them! It’ll be a great night and a fun social outing for the club, testing our endurance in the lead up to Winter Comp and Southern University Games.
Wings for Life is an international not-for-profit spinal cord research foundation and 100% of the net entry fee and 100% of the tax-exempt entry fee boost goes to Wings for Life, the more we can add to support spinal cord injury research, the sooner we’ll find the cure. Let’s make it a thing of the past. All administrative costs of the event and foundation are kindly covered by the Red Bull company.
SUGs will be held in Footscray this year, from Sunday the 3rd of July – Thursday the 7th of July.
We intend on entering two mixed teams of 14 people each. This means that there will be a limited number of positions available, so the trailing process will be quite competitive. Only current La Trobe University students are eligible to compete. If you’re wanting to play with us for SUGs you are expected to come to at least one of the following trails:
Trials will be held at the Lower Playing Fields (Bundoora Campus) on Monday April 4th (next week), and Monday April 11th from 6pm-8pm. We will still hold a normal training session for those not wishing to trial, so please let us know before we start whether you’re interested in uni games or not.
There is also a regional trial at the Bendigo Campus on Sunday April 17th from 11am-12pm. While we will be running a couple of the training sessions for the SUGs team in Bendigo, it is expected that you are able to make it to some of the Bundoora trainings as well.
If there are exceptional circumstances which prevent you from attending any of these trails, then please email the club. We will notify everyone about team selections on April 19th.
You will be given more information regarding finance after the selection process, but here is the basic costs:
Registration fees = $165
La Trobe fees = $65
As it’s nice and close to home this year we won’t have to worry about transport, however we are still looking into booking accommodation to stay as a team – which makes it easier for getting to and from the fields and the social events, and is also a lot more fun! We’ll let you know the details closer to the date.
If you have any questions regarding uni games don’t hesitate to get in touch with me or email the club. SUGs is one of the best experiences you’ll have at uni, so hopefully I’ll see you all down at trials!
AFFILIATES CUP WRAP UP
LTUTC entered two teams into the Affiliates Cup on the 21st of February.
Both teams played well throughout the entire day, supporting one another and watching a lot of touch football!
The mixed team entered in Social Mixed A won their pool games, however lost in a tough semi-final.
The womens team entered in Womens Open also were very successful in their pool games, loosing their semi final to the Victorian State Girls Team.
Thanks to all those who played, we will be looking to enter teams again in the tournament next year!
